THE LOCAL GENIUS // GRAPHIC DESIGN IS ART

I'm an artist and a graphic designer currently based in Moscow. My alias "the Local Genius" is paraphrase of Roman "genius loci" ~ an archaic pagan concept of a spirit dwelling in a certain place like a hill or a grove. For me it is a very inspired expression of human amazement in front of the Cosmos and natural forces. On the other hand, the interdependence of locality and universality is a subject of my interest, since the culture itself might be seen as a fractal, where the smallest parts are combined into larger clusters and finally form the whole pattern, which is simple as a child's game and complex as the Universe at the same time. Here's my philosophy from A to Ω:

There's no meaning in nature, only an accident and possibility. There's no meaning in stones on the seashore, in changing of the seasons, in diamonds in a mountain depths or grains of gold in a river sand. In life or death. The only meaning present, is created by us ~ we have the ability to produce the purpose for life. As Carl Sagan said in his "Cosmos: Personal Voyage" ~ we are the way for the Cosmos to know itself. So the meaning is much more valuable then nonsense.

It is really important to say something through whatever you do. To share your truth, your knowledge, your vision, your thoughts and memories with others. To do the right things is cooler then just being or looking cool, seriously... I want to say only things I know for sure, something I believe. I think it's time to make something real. Something simple and free from any useless, unnecessary complexity. It's time for truth and changes. I strongly believe that it is important not only to know something, but to act according to your ideas and beliefs. Always. That's why I do not deal with meat, fur, tobacco and alcohol producers, distributors or advertisers.

CONTEMPORARY ART IS A RELIGION OF CAPITALISM, IT IS A BRANCH CUT OFF FROM THE TREE OF CULTURE

We have to declare a new era, new culture and a new philosophy. Contemporary art entirely became a capitalism religion. Galleries are its shrines and curators are its priests. In this order art is deprived from both true emotion and logic. There's no place for imagination or inspiration. The very pith of culture was stolen from humanity to make it a property of the few, the initiated, closed community. One of the central ideas of modernism was the concept of the end of history. This anti-scientific statement is important indeed, because through it we can see the concealed meaning of the alliance between contemporary art and business elite. The end of history means that there would be no more serious changes, revolutions or social development ~ the existing order is declared to be the final frontier of our civilization. It is nothing but a statement of the thousand-year Reich of neoliberalism, hidden behind the blanks, false blood and the toy riot of the cultural phenomenon called "contemporary art".

Art was always developing through the religion and myth. The religion and myth of today are information and communication. So the art today is graphic design. If once it has enough power to break free from the gravitational field of trade, it could mark the beginning of a new cultural epoch, a New Renaissance. The style is a visual language, a powerful tool to connect people through space and time. Art has no borders, it belongs to everyone.

The world culture evolution both technical and spiritual was always based on the abillity to copy and modify. If you don't believe it, just look up in a school history book. Copyright is good for certain people but bad for civilization. There is a conflict between personal interest and common development. It is unlikely that the existing copyright system is able to solve this problem, it is fundamentally wrong. You may use my artworks in any non-commercial case, not connected to religion, philosophy or politics. Asking for permission is much appreciated, but not obligatory. This policy doesn't apply to my commercial works and artworks made specially for certain persons ~ others may have their own vision of this subject.
